6-8 Assessments

Assessments are a necessary tool by which we can identify students’ strengths and weaknesses in order to better individualize their educational plan and supports and they are used to inform classroom instruction. These tools also assist us in determining a student’s level of academic mastery and may play a significant role in grade level placement decisions.

Interim Assessments

IAs help determine student mastery of the Georgia standards of excellence and drive instruction throughout the school year. Students are required to take the Interim Assessments monitored on camera regardless of their proficiency level.

Students in grades 6-8 take Interim Assessments (IAs).

NWEA MAP

NWEA MAP tests are administered 3 times per school year for grades 6-8. MAP assessments are taken online at specified times and are monitored on camera. These assessments are mandatory.

Should I help my student with assessments?

While it may be tempting to assist your student when taking assessments, helping does not allow teachers to adequately determine your child's current progress or to identify any additional academic supports they may need. Assisting with tests and assessments may ultimately result in a skewing of your student's academic growth measures. Please do not help your student answer questions on assessments.

Do students in Grades 6-8 take the Georgia Milestones?

Yes. Students in Grades 6-8 take an End-Of-Grade (EOG) Assessment in English/Language Arts and Mathematics, and students in Grade 8 are also assessed in Science and Social Studies.

Students in grades 6-8 are required to receive a reading determination of Grade Level or Above on the Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade Assessment in reading and to attain an achievement level of “Developing Learner”, “Proficient Learner”, or “Distinguished Learner” on the mathematics and ELA sections of the Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade Assessment to be promoted to the next grade level.

All grades 6-8 students that failed math or reading/ELA are offered summer remediation to assist in closing academic gaps in knowledge/skills.

For grade 8, if a student takes the Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade Assessment and does not score proficient or distinguished in reading, mathematics, and/or ELA, we offer help for the student to reinforce academic skills needing additional attention and an opportunity to take the Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade Assessment again. A student who does not score at grade level on this second administration of the Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade Assessment or who does not take the second administration of the Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade Assessment may be retained.

Georgia Milestones Assessments are mandatory and require face-to-face/in-person participation. Opt-outs are not permitted.

Note: The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) does not offer Science or Social Studies EOG summer retest opportunities. The GaDOE does not offer 6^th or 7^th graders the opportunity to retake EOGs during the summer. GaDOE makes the decision which retests are offered. Georgia Cyber Academy has no say in the matter.

Middle Grades students take an End-Of-Course (EOC) Assessment for each of the high school courses listed in the EOC course table referenced in the District Parent/Student Handbook at the completion of that subject, unless a dual enrollment college final or AP exam exemption is allowed per GaDOE guidelines.

Is My Student Required to be On Camera When Taking Assessments?

Yes. Students are required to be on camera and microphone for assessments. Students are placed in a testing room where only the teacher has access to view the student's webcam and hear the student's microphone. Teachers are able to interact with the student during the assessment timeframe should the student encounter any issues or need assistance.
