College Bound Week: a Big Top Success!

College Bound Week: a Big Top Success!
Maria Blencowe

On Wednesday, November 6th, 2024 GCA SGB Counseling Department’s Dream Big Week Committee had the incredible honor of assisting our juniors and seniors take a huge step toward their futures during our in-person carnival themed Big Top College Adventure. Seeing students come together, for the Apply to College Day, focused and determined, filling out college applications, submitting scholarship applications, drafting personal statements, and sharing stories about their dreams was truly inspiring. The energy in the room was electric, a blend of excitement, nervousness, and pride, as students worked toward making college a reality.

For many, this was the first time they'd ever filled out an application, and they tackled it with such courage and resilience. Watching students hit "submit" on their first college application was a powerful reminder of the strength and ambition these young people have. For every college application and scholarship application, there was a roar of applause and cheers to celebrate the accomplishment. It’s the start of something incredible for them, and we are proud to have created a space for them to soar.

Counselors and staff were managing booths, circulating the room, answering questions, and providing that extra boost of encouragement and support. Our team was invaluable, giving advice and helping students understand the various options available to them. HBCU 360° provided a unique experience with a virtual reality college tour. In the spirit of Carnival, we had fresh popcorn, a sundae bar, a funnel cake food truck and hot pizza. We also had our Superintendent, Mr. Kooi, our SGB Principal, Ms. Zimmerman, and various administrators stop by to cheer on our students.

This event provided such an incredible opportunity for our students. We are so hopeful for each student’s journey and look forward to seeing where they go. Last week was a celebration of hard work, dreams, and the bright futures ahead for GCA Champions.
